And here we are! The journal is finally live after a good twelve months of me trying my best to ignore the fact that I really needed to get this section of the site going. The plan is to update here with behind the scenes (BTS as the kids call it) footage and insights in to how each wedding is filmed throughout 2025 and beyond, as well as maybe providing some tips and tricks for couples every now and then. That said, I’m super keen to avoid the trend of asking ChatGPT to generate “5 tips to…” blog posts for me – I want to keep this real. So here we are…
In case you haven’t come across me me before, I’m Lee; a wedding videographer based in the South West, but covering the entirety of the UK and beyond! My journey to the wedding industry is an interesting one – it wasn’t until I got married myself back in 2017 that the thought of filming weddings even entered my head.
Now, I don’t want to stereotype, but I’d say I was more involved in the planning of our day than many grooms are. That said, my two main tasks were to find the perfect videographer and photographer. Unfortunately I succeeded in only one of those. The photographer was ace (thanks Dan!)…but the videography side of things wasn’t so good. It’s a long story and it would be wrong of me to name names, but let’s just say that we were lucky to get some form of wedding film – many other couples didn’t.
Loving cameras and filming things, I spent much of my wedding day watching the videographer saying “I could definitely do that”. The comments continued after the wedding, too, to the point that my wife, Danielle, confronted me and told me that instead of constantly giving it the big one, why didn’t I just do it? The thought terrified me.
Fast forward a couple of years and a friend of ours got in touch to ask if I would be interested in filming their wedding in a couple of months time. “You’re joking, right?”. Not a chance. Filming the biggest day of someone’s life, with all that pressure to deliver a cinematic masterpiece? No thanks.
Fast forward another couple of years and, after a number of postponements for said couple, my curiosity got the better of me and I reached out to ask if they still needed to someone to film their day. Thankfully they did, so rather than asking them to pay for the privilege, I offered to film their day for free so there would be zero expectation for me to produce anything decent, and zero risk for the couple as they wouldn’t have spent a penny if what a captured was garbage. On the flip side, they get to receive something for nothing, and I get the opportunity to see if filming weddings is something I want to, and can, do.
Long story short; I fell in love with it and haven’t looked back since. The couple absolutely loved the films and I loved putting them together. I was hooked. What’s not to like? I get to spend the day filming people celebrating one of the happiest days of their life, and have the privilege of piecing together films that they can cherish and share for the rest of their lives. Naturally I’d class myself as an extroverted introvert, so the job suits me down to the ground; I can float around like a ninja while people enjoy themselves, without feeling like they are being intruded upon. It all points to beautiful candid footage that couples so often crave. Don’t get me wrong, I love to have a laugh with my couples and their families, but you certainly won’t find me trying to be the centre of attention. My reviews back this up, although I’m not sure how to take this one…
“My Husband was apprehensive about having a videographer on the wedding day, thinking it would disrupt the flow of the day, this wasn’t the case at all. We hardly noticed the cameras or Lee (sorry Lee)!” – Hollie & Jordon, 2024
Heading in to the 2025 wedding season, things are going to be a little different. Our second child, Eden, arrived in February to complete the family! The plan has always been to limit the number of weddings I cover this year, as doing this will ensure that all of my couples continue to receive the same level of service that Red Letter Films has become known for, while also limiting the impact the editing process has on my family time.
Despite the limited number of weddings, 2025 is still set to be a fantastic year with plenty films to come, along with behind the scenes clips and insights in to how each day was captured. You can get an idea of what to expect from the BTS clips over on my Instagram. The season is set to kick off on May 9th with a flurry of weddings through the summer months, so expect lots of updates both here and on social media. The final wedding is planned for September, after which I’ll take a well-earned break before heading in to 2026.
The plan is to return to the regular schedule in 2026 and a number of dates are already booked with some incredible couples at stunning venues throughout the UK. It’s set to be the biggest year yet for Red Letter Films so if you’re still considering whether to book a videographer for your wedding, don’t sit on the fence for too long – wedding vendors are getting booked sometimes two or three years in advance!
Anyway, I hate goodbyes, but I’ll leave you with some of my favourite moments from the 2024 wedding season. Peace.
